What is the size of the Helsinki Library in relation to other libraries in the world? 995 There are different types of libraries such as school, research and public libraries. Different library types have different tasks, and therefore their operational figures vary. Also, there are many different ways in which to assess these operations, for example, the number of library items, number of registered customers, number of loans, number of visits etc. By and large, it is very difficult to find mutually compatible statistics because library activities vary from one library type to another. Since you did not specify which particulars you are interested in, hear are two websites which contain overall worldwide library statistics. These, however, do not cover individual libraries such as the Helsinki City Library. http://www.ifla.…

Good morning from Barcelona, I would like to know ho many bookmobiles are in Finland and, if it is possible, could you tell me where can I find more… 304 In 2016 there were 137 book mobiles in Finland, 6 675 088 items were borrowed from the book mobiles, and there were 10 414 book mobile stops in the country, http://tilastot.kirjastot.fi/index.php?orgs=1&years=2016&stats=100 . More library statistics can be found in the Finnish Public Libraries Statistics, http://tilastot.kirjastot.fi/index.php?lang=en . There is a mobile library site, but helas, it's only in Finnish, https://www.kirjastot.fi/kirjastoautot. There is a contact person, however, you could write to, Heli Itkonen-Vesa (heli.itkonen-vesa@jns.fi) and ask for more detailed information. There is a nice video about mobile library activity and cooperation in northern Finland, Lappland, http://now.libraries.fi/mobile.html in…

First of all, my apologies if this isn't the right forum to pose this question. Sometime ago I bought all the DVDs for a TV show called Twin Peaks. It's in… 186 Don't worry, this is just the right place to ask questions! The copyrigt legislation in Finland requires the library to pay for the possibility to lend out movies. This is why the Finnish libraries are not allowed to lend out donated movies. Many libraries have a place for recycling books, records and movies. You can leave your Twin Peaks DVD's to your closest library, if they have this service available. If not, you can ask the nearest one. Heikki Poroila

How do you say in Finnish: "Set and maintain boundaries"? 240 Translation isn't easy. In most cases, you need to know more how and where the sentence is used. Like in this case: what kind of boundary is being set and maintained? A literal boundary line between neighbours or countries? More abstract concept, like personal boundaries in a certain situation? Perhaps "Asettaa ja ylläpitää rajoja" would work in both cases? If this is about personal boundaries, I might add a possessive affix.
I have my library card. How do I reserve the book? 164 1. Are the Ask a Librarian answers published (stored in an open database)? 1053 The answers are stored whether in public or non-public archive. Most of the answers are stored in the open archive. The non-public database is open only for librarians, they can visit it in the same web-adress and with same logins-passwords, where they do the answering. Nowadays about 40% of answers are stored in non-public archive. You put the answer to the non-public archive if you think that it is not useful for anybody else or the same question and answer to it is already in the public archive (for example how to get a PIN-code to your library card). Usually we also put answer to the non-public archive if we can’t help the questioner in any way (didn’t find the answer and not even couldn’t give any organisation or specialist to ask for…
I am an Egyptian student , I am doing my master in Library and Information science, My theses is about (Egyptian public libraries web sites on Internet). In my… 901 I assume that your question concerns the Libraries.fi(Kirjastot.fi)-web site (http://www.kirjastot.fi , http://www.biblioteken.fi , http://www.libraries.fi ). This website was originally the website of Finnish Public Libraries. Presently there are also other Libraries in the service, that is why it now is the Website of Finnish Libraries. It was published for the first time june 1995. The first problem that you face is the fact that our english website is only a very much shortened version of the finnish and the swedish websites. So if you want to compare your Egyptian website with the Finnish one, you would have to explore the finnish version of the site. Some information about Kirjastot.fi can be read in the infopage, http://www.…
I would like to know which classification system you use, and its the same as the other libraries in Finland? Thanks! 213 Tuusula library uses YKL - Yleisten kirjastojen luokitusjärjelstelmä, in English PLC - Finnish Public Libraries Classification System, http://finto.fi/ykl/en/. It is used in all public libraries except the Helsinki city library, who has it's own classification system, HCLCS - Helsinki City Library Classification System, http://finto.fi/hklj/en/.

The difference between Medline and MedLARS 2150 The difference between Medline and MedLars is not very clear. Medlars (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System) is the computerised biomedical bibliographic retrieval system which was launched by the U.S. National Library of Medicine in 1964. It allows rapid access to NLM's store of biomedical information. Medlars was the first large scale, computer based, retrospective search service available to the general public. In 1971 an online version called MEDLINE ("MEDLARS Online") became available. MEDLINE® is the best known of NLM's databases. Essentially Index Medicus online, MEDLINE enables anyone to query the NLM computer's store of journal article references on specific topics. It currently contains 9 million references going back…

Is there a CD recording of a Finish military or military-type brass band playing FINlANDIA? 717 You probably mean Finlandia, op. 26 by Jean Sibelius. There are some CD recordings of the complete Finlandia played by a Finnish military(-type) brass band. I found these four: 1. 90 vuotta suomalaista sotilasmusiikkia : Puolustusvoimien juhlalevy (2 CDs and 1 DVD, Puolustusvoimat SAMCD 90, 2008) (Finlandia played by Sotilasmusiikkikoulu) 2. Viimeinen asemiesilta (Poptori 50181052, 2006) (Finlandia played by Kaartin soittokunta, the hymn part sung by two male choirs) 3. Puolustusvoimien Varusmiessoittokunta 17: Suomalaista sotilasmusiikkia 3 (PEttus-os SAMCD-22, 2003) (Finlandia played Puolustusvoimien Varusmiessoittokunta 17) 4. Haminan Soittokunta: Viisi vuotta (Haminan Soittokunta HamSKCD-1, 2001) (Finlandia played by Haminan…
When is this book going to be available? https://haku.helmet.fi/iii/encore/record/C__Rb2366259?lang=eng&suite=def Kata 179 If you look at the information under COPIES ON ORDER, there is the line " 1 copy ordered for Myyrmäki aik on 01-10-2018." The book has been ordered already in October 2018, but for some reason - usually unknown to the library - the seller has not been able to provide us with a copy. Unfortunately this is not a rare situation, many items are late, out of print or totally cancelled. Let's hope this one is another case. You can see the situation by following this "Copies on order" information line. Heikki Poroila
