My mother and father competed in the international games for the deaf in helsinki finland in 1961. i would like information about that, in english. thank you… 182 28.12.2002 I do not seem to be able to find information about the games you mean in the databases available in public libraries, probably mainly because news from that period have not yet been indexed in the article reference data bases. There are, however, two institutions that would probably be able to help you. (I assume you mean athletic games for the deaf.) Suomen Urheilukirjasto ("Finnish Athletic Library", http://www.stadion.fi/Urheilumuseo/kirjasto/kirjasto.html has a wide archive of different materials about athletics. Their home pages only seem to exist in Finnish, but I am sure you can contact them directly, E-mail: urheilukirjasto@stadion.fi The other organization for you to contact is Finnish Athletic Association of the Deaf (Suomen…
History of the town Karis, Karjaa - earliest date for the origin of the name and meaning of Karis Thank you 964 25.4.2003 The history of Karjaa is long and impressive. The earliest population dates back to the stone age, about 10 000 years back. Between 500 B.C. and 900 A.D. Karjaa was one of the most densely populated areas in Finland. For the first time Karjaa was mentioned in script in 1326 A.D. The name was spelled "Kariis". Later on it was also spelled "Karis", "Karisa" and "Caris". Unfortunately the philologists disagree on the origin of the name. It looks like that the Swedish name "Karis" is a translation of the Finnish name "Karjaa". Where does this come from, nobody knows reliably. The archaelogists say that there was a very strong influence from Estonia, especially from Saaremaa Islans, where there is a county called "Karja" (= Carries). According…
For my masters dissertation I am researching into how Public Libraries classify adult fiction books.I would be interested to know how Finnish libraries… 696 30.7.2003 Hello! Finnish public libraries use genres when classifying adult fiction. Most used way is to separate few well known genres from the fiction stock. In Kallio branchlibrary we have separated crime (detective novels), horror, science fiction, fantasy, romance, war, humor and hunting (fishing & hunting)novels. Rest of the books are normally on the self, and e. g. translated literature and finnish literature are on the same shelf. Some libraries might use more genres e.g. Kuhmo library. It´s not common to classify the whole fiction stock. Content description and subject indexing of novels helps in fiction retrieval. I couldn`t find scientific material in english. Here in one web-dissertation. It is in finnish, but there is an english…
Dear Sir or Madam, I was wondering whether you could provide me with info regarding Helsinki City Libraries which have a choice of videos in English available… 484 8.11.2003 All Helsinki City Libraries have a choice of videos in English available for borrowing. It is customary in Finland to provide foreign films with subtitles, not dub them, so the sound track (speech, that is) is original. Big downtown libraries are: Rikhardinkatu, Töölö, and Kallio. Where they are and how to get there: http://www.lib.hel.fi/english/library_info/list_of_libraries/index.html You can search our database HelMet in http://www.helmet.fi/screens/opacmenu.html Select KEYWORD. Type two asterisks (**) in the search field. Then select VIDEOCASSETTE or DVD under "All types of materials". Then select the language (English). You get the list of matches in chronological order, the newest first. You can limit the search by year, if you don'…

I would like to know all I can about Taivalkoski. Particularly about what life was like there between the years 1870-1900. 551 20.3.2007 Taivalkoski in the north-east of Finland is a small community with only some 6000 inhabitants. Many of the names in Taivalkoski are of Lappish origin. For instance Jurmu, the name of your ancestor, is a Lappish word for a deep basin in a river. For finding out about your ancestors please contact the Genealogical Society of Finland at http://www.genealogia.fi/indexe.htm Professor Jouko Vahtola at the University of Oulu has written about the history of Pudasjärvi, Taivalkoski and Jokijärvi. His e-mail address is jouko.vahtola@oulu.fi Parts of Kalle Päätalo's autobiographical novel series about Iijoki and Koillismaa are probably translated and they might be possible for you to get a hold on. You can contact the library of Taivalkoski…

I'm interested in learning about the classification system used in your library 1400 13.10.2008 You do not specify the library whose classification system you would like to know about. Do you mean the classification systems in Finnish libraries in general? There are several classification systems used in different libraries in Finland. First of all, to get a general idea about the Finnish library system, please have a look at http://www.libraries.fi/en-GB/ , where you will find access to basically every library in Finland, along with their web OPACs (open public access catalogues). Roughly, one could say that the public libraries here use the Finnish Public Libraries Classification System (PLC) and the scientific and university libraries use the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). This would nevertheless give an oversimplified…
