The National Library of Finland receives a 280 000 € grant for newspaper digitizing

The Helsingin Sanomat Foundation has granted the National Library of Finland a 280 000 € grant for digitizing the biggest daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat and tabloid Ilta-Sanomat up to 31 December 1979. The project will start on September 1 2021 and the material consists of over half a million pages.

With this grant, the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation wants to celebrate the 250th jubilee year of Finnish press, which is celebrated this year, and the 90th anniversary of Ilta-Sanomat, which is in 2022. The National Library of Finland opens all digitized material to researchers and citizens free of charge via the digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi service at the National Library and other legal deposit libraries, and preserves material permanently according to international standards.
