Searching catalogues of Finnish libraries

Public libraries

Finnish public library collections usually include books, newspapers and periodicals, maps, sheet music, talking books, cassettes, CDs, CD-ROMs, videos, DVDs etc. Details of all material, such as titles and authors, are stored in the online public access catalogue.

Library catalogues can be accessed on the Internet, as most of the public library catalogues have a web-based interface and can be accessed over the Net.

In most catalogues you can check to see which items you have on loan and when they are due to be returned. Registered users with PIN numbers can also often renew and reserve items through the World Wide Web. Titles not at your local library can be requested from other libraries through the inter-library loan system. Ask at your local library for further details.

One single online access to all public library databases can presently not be delivered because the information on the material in Finnish Public Libraries is saved in over 135 different databases. Searches in different public library databases can be accessed trough following links at the Libraries.fi:

Public libraries also provide access to several special databases, which are only available on the public access work stations at libraries. E. g. the union catalogue of Finnish University Libraries ( Linnea ) and Ebsco MasterFile Premier full text database are available at every Public Library in Finland on all workstations.

University, University of Applied Sciences and other libraries

University libraries have a union catalogue Linda. Other libraries have their own catalogues.
